Attendees: Chantelle Brightbill; Laura Bray; KC Cavanaugh; Dori Conboy; Janet Crothers; Susan Manson; Bunnie Mauldin; Gwen Nishida; Yolanda Radig; Regan Rothery; Jennifer Schmidt; Janet Smith; Kristine Tsai.

Treasurer’s Report: Bunnie reported that we have 11 members who have paid their dues. Until July 31, members can receive an Early Bird Discount and pay $35. After August 1, the dues are $40. Membership runs from July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012. We applied for and received our tax ID number and will be opening a bank account before the next monthly meeting. Revenue as of July 28, 2011 is $400.00. Expenses include paying the annual fee of $199.95 for our Ning website, due August 1. We anticipate some future expenses, such as membership card printing, fees for filing business forms, printing costs for flyers, labels, and, depending on the number of members, we can schedule future activities for members only with a majority vote of the membership. Any future activities to be voted upon will be announced on Ning before the meeting at which the vote will be taken.

Announcements:

  1. Our next Weekend Sew is on Sunday, August 21st from 12-4 pm at The Sewing Party. A request was made to schedule some Weekend Sews on Saturdays, and we will try to alternate Saturdays and Sundays starting in 2012.

  2. Our next monthly meeting is on Thursday, August 25th from 6:30-8:30 pm at The Sewing Party.

  3. The Long Beach International Quilt Show started today and runs through Sunday. Several members indicated that they plan to go.

  4. Deidra Foster, our Philanthropy Quilt Chair, has moved to North Carolina. She will really be missed and we need someone to take over this important position. A baby quilt was recently finished and is being donated to Casa Teresa. Regan will take it to Casa Teresa next week.

  5. We have scheduled a Scrap Sew Workshop on Sunday, October 23 at The Sewing Party that will be open to people who have paid their membership dues. This is an extra Sew and does not replace our regular Weekend Sew on October 16. Each person needs to bring 3 bags of scraps (small ones, medium sized ones and large ones). Yolanda will facilitate this workshop where we will learn how to make improvisational quilt blocks with our scraps.

  6. We have a field trip to Michael Levine and the Fabric District on Friday, September 16 from 9 am-6 pm. See the announcement on Ning.

  7. Yolanda told us that she applied online for a VIP Discount Card at Jo-Ann Fabrics. It was mailed to her and she validated it at her local Jo-Ann store. VIP card holders receive a 10% discount on their total purchase, including sale items.

  8. We have had requests and are looking for someone to do a demo on hand quilting at a future monthly meeting. Chantelle offered to do a demo on hand dyeing fabrics, possibly at the September meeting.

  9. An Evening with Kaffe Fassett has been scheduled on September 26 in LA. Cecile Choi is trying to get him to come to The Sewing Party to do a workshop while he is in So. Cal. Stay tuned for more information.

Block of the Quarter: The Block of the Quarter for Fall is due at the September monthly meeting. The pattern is called Pick Up Stix and the pattern is posted on Ning. Colors for the main block are white, white-on-white, off-white – any white-white-ish color. The “stix” are any autumn color – your choice. You shouldn’t have to purchase any fabric for this block – hit that stash!

Fat Quarter Swap: This month, the theme was anything that reminds you of summer.

August Fat Quarter Swap: For the August meeting, the theme is Hot August Nights. Use your imagination!

Show and Tell: We were treated to some fabulous show and tell items from Jennifer, Chantelle, Laura, Janet C., Janet S., KC and Yolanda. Yolanda also showed some quilts that were given to her by a co-worker and made by someone who no longer quilts. We can possibly use these as charity quilts.

Other business:

  1. Janet suggested that we could bring some extra money into our Guild treasury by each person bringing a mini-project or quilt to a meeting and members buying tickets for an opportunity drawing.

  2. Yolanda received two $10 gift cards from Flying Geese Fabrics for door prizes and a drawing was held.

  3. As the meeting was closing, Yolanda, Susan and Bunnie talked about the Round Robin Quilting Bee that was discussed at our June meeting. We decided to create either a 12 ½” (12” finished) block or a 30” row of sashing and bring it to the August meeting. We invite anyone who is interested to do the same and bring it to the August meeting as well. For more details, see the June meeting minutes posted on Ning.
