Meeting Minutes

April 2013

April 2013

We are continuing with great  turnouts for our monthly meetings, thank you to everyone for coming.

The  meeting introduction was 'What color do you mostly use or would like to use in your negative space'. Most of us are fond of the kona colors - white, snow, cream, ash, or coal. We had some interesting thoughts on the use of low volume and text prints and some of us were introduced to Moda tones and Moda grunge for the first time. Some really great ideas always come from this intro section.

OCMQG Officer Elections

It’s almost that time of year again, when we elect our officers. We need you to nominate yourself or someone else (with their permission) for the positions of

President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. We also need volunteers to head up various committees. Details will be on the website and you will nominate via the website too.

Elections will be at the June meeting.

Guest Speaker - Jonathon Fong

Jonathon introduced us to products called ‘Craft Attitude’and ‘Quilt Attitude’.

It is an inkjet printer film that can be adhered to practically anything. Jonathon had some great samples including his own wearable art shoes and jacket.

Essentially you can select anything to print onto the film, then you can attach the selected print to the surface of your choice using either a glue stick or spray mount adhesive.

You can find Jonathon and his tutorials on http://www.stylewithasmile.tv

or http://www.jonathanfongstyle.com

He very generously donated lots of products so we’re expecting to see some great products from our lucky winners.

The OCMQG ‘giving back sew’

was held as our monthly sew in April, a lot was accomplished and even more fun was had by those who attended, so we’ve scheduled another for our July sew.

The ‘Negative Space’ challenge

Our new OCMQG challenge is to create something using negative space, it can be anything you like so long as one side is at least 40”. Your creation will show your creative use of negative space. As usual all submissions will be judged by members present at the July meeting with prizes going to the top three.

The Yankee Swap

Was great fun, lots of fabulous gift items made by our very creative members, and of course the ‘yankee swaping’ was ruthless. We’ll be doing another one soon, so watch out for details.

Show and Tell

Our members brought the usual selection to totally amazing work.

Kathy has a quilt made by a family member about 130 years ago, and not only was the condition great but the use of negative space was very ‘modern’. Kathy also showed us a quilt made with brights for her soon to be latest grand-baby.

Leigh had another of her amazing scrappy quilts, and Nancy showed us a chevron/streak of lightning quilt.

Upcoming Events

Invitation to submit quilts to the Flying Geese Guild Quilt Show.

We have been invited by FGG to submit a selection of modern quilts for a trunk show. Their quilt show is  September 15th 2013 and is  held at Soka University.

Everyone is encouraged to bring some of their quilts to our August meeting. This is a great opportunity to show the fantastic work done by our members

Patchwork Show

Janet's blocks are are done and ready for her . There are no bee blocks this month, but bee members will be getting another block package in May.

Anyone wishing to sign up can do so at meetings and take an available month.

You will need to provide everything for the block you want the other members to make. Have it ready to hand out at the meeting and remember who is making your blocks.

The completed block needs to be returned to its owner at the following months meeting, if you're not going to be able to make the meeting please arrange to get the block to it's owner.
